January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
January 5, 2010
January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, dedicated to raising awareness of this type of cancer and ways to prevent it or catch it early. The use of Pap smears, improvements in managing pre-cancerous abnormalities, and the introduction of a vaccine against the cause of cervical cancer, infection with the human papilloma virus, make cervical cancer a disease against which we have made great progress.
Late last year, new guidelines for cervical cancer screening were developed. Thanks to Dr. Howard Jones, chair of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Vanderbilt and a member of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, for answering questions about the new guidelines.
