Celebrating Cancer Survivorship

June 22, 2010

Sunday, June 6 was a day for hope, celebration and remembrance.

Each June, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center hosts an annual Celebration of Cancer Survivorship to coincide with National Cancer Survivors Day.

More than 350 cancer survivors, family members, friends and health care professionals who care for cancer patients came together for this year’s event.

The event featured musical performances, a special “Swingin’ Safari” event for children touched by cancer, a candle lighting ceremony, and keynote speaker Rachel Lozano, 27, a three-time cancer survivor who was picked 2008 Woman of the Year by readers of Glamour magazine.

Also, select pieces from the Lilly Oncology On Canvas ™ art exhibition honoring the physical and emotional journeys people face when confronted by a cancer diagnosis were displayed during the event.

Vanderbilt-Ingram patients, doctors, nurses, and researchers also took part in producing a fun video to celebrate all those impacted by cancer and those who are dedicated to eliminating cancer as a threat to life and well-being. The video, which was shown at the event, can be viewed at:

The annual survivorship event was co-sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the Tennessee Cancer Coalition.
